Activision Throwing a Call of Duty Convention In Los Angeles, Expects 6000 attendees

June 30, 2011 by Josh Wanamaker

Activision has decided that BlizzCon simply isn’t enough on it’s own, and is throwing a Call of Duty convention this September.

They're calling it Call of Duty XP 2011, and it's going to take place at a facility in Los Angeles that'll probably be made up to look like a bunch of Call of Duty maps, as it's 12-acres in size! According to Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, it's going to "feel like you stepped into the game".

The event is going to cost fans $175 for a ticket, but fear not! Activision, already nose-deep in cash, will be donating all profits from ticket sales to the Call of Duty Endowment, which assists real veterans with the often-traumatic process of transitioning back into civilian life. Good on you for that, Activision. Hirshberg supplemented that info by admitting "…the event itself will cost us considerably more than we would have recouped from ticket sales, anyway. Part of it is about raising money for a great cause, part of it's about just giving a kick-ass experience for the fans."

So, for that rather large sum, fans will receive the following:

  • A chance to play Modern Warfare 3 months before it's released
  • The opportunity to compete in a 32-team tourney with a million dollar cash prize for the winner
  • Panels with the Call of Duty dev team
  • Stage shows from unannounced "AAA entertainment"
  • A usable zip line to ride on
  • A real Burger Town to eat at
  • Some kind of museum to check out
  • A (hopefully free) paintball facility built to model the "Scrapyard" map from MW2
  • A recreation of The Pit
  • Special exclusive swag

The event will be taking place September 2nd and 3rd, and tickets will go on sale July 19.
