Supreme Court Rules that Games Are Protected Under Freedom of Speech

June 28, 2011 by Josh Wanamaker

Today, the US Supreme Court upheld several previous rulings that officially state that games are protected under the 1st Amendment.

This nonsense has been ongoing in California courts for almost a decade. Brown, Schwarzenegger, Yee, it just seems like as soon as one politician fails to prove games are violent murder simulators that corrupt our children, some other asshole steps up to continue. Probably the most frustrating aspect of this whole thing is that as a taxpayer living in California, I was essentially paying for this garbage without having any say in the matter.

Fortunately, the nation's highest court has laid the smackdown on Leland Yee, the current hypocrite to push the fight against games, and in a 7-2 majority ruling, the Supreme Court officially declared that games were a medium protected under the 1st Amendment. Just like books, movies, music, etc, games couldn't be banned from being sold to minors, as it would be unconstitutional.

To quote Justice Antonin Scalia:  "The act forbidding sale or rental of violent games to minors does not comport with the 1st Amendment." He also belted out this gem "Reading Dante is unquestionably more cultured and intellectually edifying than playing Mortal Kombat. But these cultural and intellectual differences are not constitutional ones."

I'm sure there are some hardcore MK geeks out there that would love to contest that statement, but then I doubt many of them have read Dante.
