Post-apocalyptic video games are incredibly popular and we are always seeing this setting to tell their story or provide for some entertaining gameplay. In this list, we’re going to showcase fifteen incredible modern video game releases that are set around the post-apocalyptic theme. As a result, we’re sticking with games or remastered editions that launched for at least the last-generation console platform era so anything prior won’t be listed below. Likewise, since these games can be quite different in terms of genre and gameplay, don’t think of these games as ranked in a specific order
#30 Once Human
Platform: PC
Release Date: July 9, 2024
Most post-apocalyptic games give you one serious kind of challenge to overcome and puts you to task with dealing with it. However, in Once Human, the threat is literally everywhere. The alien entity known as “Stardust” has infected the entire world, creating massive monsters and putting humanity on its last legs. You are able to fight back via the powers that Stardust gave you, but it comes at a cost.
The more contaminated food and water you consume, the more your powers will grow, but the more you’ll lose your mind. Will you sacrifice your sanity to save the world? Or will you fight to remain human and risk dying before the battle is won?
#29 Pacific Drive
Platform: PC PS5
Release Date: February 22, 2024
Most video games with a post-apocalyptic setting only feature one disaster to worry about. In Pacific Drive, you’ll be dealing with two. The first are the mighty “zone storms” ripping through the area you’re located in, and they are mighty vicious. In fact, they’re so vicious that if you get caught in one, you will die.
To escape them, you’ll have to roam through the Olympic Exclusive Zone with nothing but your car to get you through. The zone is full of “anomalies” that will push you to the test in other ways. Upgrade your car, seek out the truth, and once you survive the zone once, dive back in and try to survive it again!
#28 My Time at Sandrock
Platform: PC PS5 Xbox One XSX|S Switch
Release Date: November 02, 2023
Steam | PlayStation | Xbox | Nintendo
Not all post-apocalyptic games have to be depressing. We’ve certainly seen some games out there that use this as a backdrop to make the in-game world dire. However, My Time At Sandrock shows a modern post-apocalyptic world that is less depressing and more of a relaxing and casual experience. Much like My Time At Portia, this installment occurred hundreds of years after a massive calamity. In this title, players are taking the role of a builder who lands on a small oasis town located in the desert. However, this town is far from its former glory. As a result, players will have to spend time gathering resources, crafting items, building farmlands, interacting with the townsfolk, and rebuilding Sandrock into a safe haven town.
#27 The Talos Principle 2
Platform: PC PS4 PS5 Xbox One XSX|S
Release Date: November 09, 2023
Steam | PlayStation | Xbox
Nearly a decade after the release of The Talos Principle, developers Croteam brought out a sequel. This puzzle adventure game takes place years after the first installment. It’s hard to offer the premise of this game without spoiling the first installment. So, if you haven’t played the first game, you might want to skip ahead of this point. However, the game takes place after the first game, where we see the first android to be awakened, Athena. You’re stepping into another android who is slowly unraveling the mystery behind a world humanity left behind, and now androids take control. But a large part of this game is all about puzzles. You’ll continue getting harder puzzles, some stumping you for hours until it finally all comes together. If you enjoyed The Talos Principle, then you’re going to get very much the same type of game in its sequel. But will you be able to avoid making the same mistakes that humankind made, or will a new, more prosperous world come from the choices you make?
#26 Ghostrunner 2
Platform: PC PS5 XSX|S
Release Date: October 26, 2023
Steam | PlayStation | Xbox
If you enjoyed Ghostrunner, then a sequel might be well worth the pickup. Players can expect the same style of gameplay as the first installment but with a few additional tweaks. It’s still a very futuristic cyberpunk setup where you’re dropped into this world as essentially a glorified ninja. With that said, the game does take place after the events of the first installment. With the Keymaster taken care of, a new AI cult has emerged outside of the Dharma Tower, and it’s up to you to save humanity. This is a fast-paced game where only one hit is required to either take out your opponent. Unfortunately, the same can be said about you. On the bright side, with several checkpoints throughout the level, you’ll be right back in the action in a matter of seconds.
#25 Remnant 2
Platform: PC PS5 XSX|S
Release Date: July 25, 2023
Steam | Playstation | Xbox
Typically, in games of a “save the universe” nature, you’re a proud warrior who must rise to vanquish evil. But in Remnant II, it’s a little more complicated than that. You are one of the last members of humanity, and it’s your job to go to other worlds and figure out a way to stop a reality-destroying threat. No pressure, right?
The good news is that you’ll have plenty of options on your side for taking down this foe and the other beasts you’ll come across.
Battle up close or afar. Choose to wield massively powerful weapons or use whatever you have to heal yourself and others.
In this apocalyptic landscape, every little bit counts.
#24 ZERO Sievert
Platform: PC
Release Date: November 15, 2022
If you’re a fan of shooters, then check into ZERO Sievert. This game puts players into a fictional Russia in shambles thanks to nuclear reactor explosions. Now the land is full of hostile beasts and few resources available. That’s where you’re taking up the role of just another survivor in this harsh world. You’ll need to explore the area, seek out resources, make weapons, and attempt to survive for another day. But since this game is procedurally generated, each time you venture from the safety of a hub, you’ll be presented with a slightly different map.
#23 The Last Spell
Platform: PC PS5 PS4 Switch
Release Date: March 09, 2023
Within The Last Spell, players are tasked with defending what is left of humanity. Set in a little village, you’re forced into spending as much time as possible building it up. Add defenses and ensure those behind the walls make it through the night. Once the sun sets, you’ll have to embrace an onslaught of monsters. This turn-based tactical game has players spending their time fortifying a base and preparing their troops for the next wave of beasts to fight off. But since this is a procedurally generated game, you never know what type of enemy waves you’ll be facing against.
#22 The Last of Us Part I
Platform: PC PS5
Release Date: March 28, 2023
I’m sure I don’t have to explain much about The Last of Us by now. The video game was a massive hit and continued to find success in the form of an HBO live-action adaptation. But it was back in 2022 when Naughty Dog first introduced The Last of Us Part 1. This is a remake of the franchise’s first game, which eventually saw a release on PC in 2023. If you somehow missed out on this game, it’s an action-adventure title that follows a man named Joel that gets tasked with transporting a young girl named Ellie across the United States. But since the world is completely out of whack thanks to a new zombie-like disease, it’s a trek that will be against the duo’s odds. Expect intense battles, detailed environments, and a storyline to keep you playing.
#21 Farlight 84
Platform: PC
Release Date: April 23, 2023
Farlight 84 is a battle royale set in a post-apocalyptic world. It’s worth noting that this game first landed on mobile devices before finding its way to the PC platform. But overall, it’s been relatively well-received by players online. Of course, it’s in early access when writing this description, so the developers continue working on a full launch. Players will find that with this title, they are getting a hero shooter. You’ll land on the map, seek out vehicles and weapons, and fight off opposing players. A big component that the developers are highlighting in this game is that they want to embrace hero skills. So it would be best if you didn’t go into this game expecting to be skilled at shooting. Instead, go into the game and find your niche with the different hero roles and hone in on their specific skills to win matches.
#20 The Last Stand: Aftermath
Platform: PC
Release Date: November 16, 2021
Genre: Survival
The Last Stand series has a new installment that came out in 2021. We now have The Last Stand: Aftermath, a new rogue-lite action-adventure game. It’s an interesting game because you’re expected to die right when you start the title. Set in a zombie-filled world, the campaign puts players into a survivor that’s already infected. Still, you’re left to find resources, fight off the dead, and roam the world. Eventually, whether it’s the virus or the infected, you’ll die off. From there, you’ll get to carry your perks and upgrades onto the next survivor. You can keep this going as long as you’d like but know that you’re always working against the clock.
#19 Scarlet Nexus
Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, X/S
Release Date: June 25, 2021
Genre: Action RPG
Scarlet Nexus is an anime-style game where players are tossed into an alternate reality. The world has been invaded by mutated creatures leaving mass chaos and panic. Fortunately, humanity has banded together and formed the OSF, an elite tactical force that strictly deals with these monsters. This elite force is a bit different because members have their supernatural power to use to their advantage. In the case of our protagonist, we have telekinesis allowing the ability to throw objects at the target. Then there’s the benefit of creating a party with members with unique skills. So there’s some freedom in how you battle against the enemy. It might not be a standard post-apocalyptic game, but this might give the genre a bit of a fresh take for players.
#18 Chernobylite
Platform: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, X/S
Release Date: July 28, 2021
Genre: Survival
Chernobylite is a survival horror game that’s not necessarily a post-apocalyptic game, but it’s still a title worth checking into. The game puts players into a former employee of the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant. Years after the catastrophic event, our protagonist decides to venture back into the Zone in hopes of uncovering what happened to their missing spouse. However, the nuclear Zone is full of hazards with military personnel, Stalkers, and mutated creatures. You’re essentially having to roam the area for a clue, resources, and crafting new useful gear. This is also a relatively short game, with the campaign only taking players just over ten hours to complete. Fortunately, there is some replay value because of the multiple endings.

PC, PS4, Xbox One 1 September 2015

Gamers will explore a giant desert wasteland as they battle foes in vehicle-based combat and it’s honestly a great game. As you venture into the open world for goods and coming across those in need, players will have to keep a close eye out for any hostile enemies that may be lurking about. The first title put players into the start of the apocalypse where a disease started to spread across the world forcing the government to use the Division as a means to keep order. While there was plenty of fans from the first game, it’s worth looking into Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. This is after the pandemic and into a new apocalyptic-kind of world.
What’s left of the Division is sent back to Washington D.C. to stop a new homeland terrorist organization trying to topple the government completely. Just like the last game, this is an MMO title where players can join in together and venture through the different missions or even take it on alone. There are several Fallout video games to look at for some great post-apocalyptic games, but if we’re sticking with more modern releases then we have to give it to Fallout 4. This particular installment throws players into the world right before the nuclear bombs are dropped. Making it to the vault for safety with your newborn child and spouse, players are made to enter chambers that put the vault inhabitants into a deep sleep until they are ready to once again resurface above. However, players wake up early to find kidnappers breaking into their spouse’s chamber, killing them, and stealing their newborn child.
Forced back into a deep slumber, players awaken again only to find that the kidnappers have fled with everyone else in the vault deceased. Now players emerge from the vault only to find a giant wasteland with nothing left but remnants of building structures. To figure out what happened to your child, players will need to venture into the open and find makeshift towns and NPCs to hopefully point our protagonist in the right direction. Along the way, players will get to meet up with several other groups that need a helping hand and hostile factions or mutated creatures.

PS4, Xbox One October 11, 2019

Frostpunk is a bit different in terms of a post-apocalyptic video game from this list. While most games focus around zombies or some type of otherworldly disease that takes most of humanity out, Frostpunk instead we are given a volcanic winter that has turned the world into a tundra. Here players are given an RTS game where your job is to lead a group of civilians into new territory. Centered around a massive goal generator, the new town can thrive by keeping the generator-powered allowing the area to not only stay warm but also provide power.
From there it’s about building up the city with homes, resource deposits, among other useful buildings such as hospitals. However, this is a tough game as you’ll need to ensure that there are enough resources available to keep everyone happy and the generator running. This means making some tough decisions such as sending out a group to find some resources out in the wild. If you can’t keep the town’s inhabitants happy and filled with resources then you might have a mutiny that will be able to run the town successfully.

Genre : Graphic adventure Interactive drama
Telltale Games The Walking Dead came out well before last-generation console platforms, but with that said there is the Definitive Edition which recently launched. Telltale Games a major player in the adventure game genre and while things didn’t last for the studio before they were closed down initially, the studio did manage to bring out a pretty incredible video game series out into the marketplace. The Walking Dead is arguably their biggest video game series to date, which likely helped since The Walking Dead was already a worldwide massive hit for the comic book and television series.
Regardless, this video game installment in particular follows a new group of characters that get swept up in the pandemic. Players are taking the role of Lee, a man who comes across a young little girl named Clementine that is alone during the zombie apocalypse. Taking the little girl in, the duo begins a hunt to find a safe city, although the world is far from a safe place with hostile creatures and humanity that is looking out strictly for themselves. This Definitive Edition offers some enhancements to the visuals while also packing the entire series for The Walking Dead together so you’re getting to see Clementine throughout the entire journey from start to finish along with some spin-off stories included into the mix as well.
#5 Dying Light 2 Stay Human
Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, XBO, X/S
Release Date: February 4, 2022
Genre: Action RPG
Dying Light’s sequel took a bit of time to get into the marketplace, but finally, it’s here. The game delivers players with more of the same gameplay we’ve come to know and love from this IP. This time around, we’re tossed in a new city, a haven from the undead horde that roams the world beyond the cities wall. Overall, the game is based on a man searching for his sister after separating. It’s an uphill battle as you venture around this dilapidated city, helping factions with their favors in return for a few notable vital pieces of information. The parkour is the real fun here, and the game is set up to be a giant playground. Players can parkour their way around the city, up buildings, vault over objects, and combine these impressive traversal skills with combat. It might be a lengthy gameplay experience if you want to complete everything there is, but this is one of the few modern post-apocalyptic video games that you will likely have no trouble wandering around endlessly.
#4 The Last of Us Remastered
Platform : PS3, PS4
Release Date :
PS3 June 14, 2013
PS4 July 29, 2014
Genre : Action-adventure, survival horror
The Last of Us was a massive hit on the PlayStation 3 and it wasn’t long after the PlayStation 4 launched that we got a remastered edition for this game. Within this game, the players are dealing with a virus that turns humans into a fungus-infected creature so a bit like zombies. Most of the world has been taken over and with no real government control, small makeshift towns and factions were built up to keep their groups alive and well.
Players in this game are stepping into the role of Joel, a middle-aged man that gets a job to transport a young girl named Ellie across the country to an anti-government faction known as the Fireflies. What their purpose is with Ellie and why the need for her transportation isn’t revealed initially, but Joel reluctantly agrees. As players venture through the overgrown world full of hostile creatures and thug factions. Not to mention this is a pretty brutal and emotional game narrative as well.
#3 The Last of Us Part 2
Platform : PS4
Release Date : June 19, 2020
Genre : Action-adventure
We can’t make mention of The Last of Us Remastered and not throw in The Last of Us Part 2. I’m going to try and avoid spoiling anything narrative-wise especially if you haven’t played the original installment. At any rate, this game does take place several years after the first title where we get to thrown into the role of a grown Ellie who has her world destroyed by an opposing faction. Now seeking revenge, Ellie begins a journey against all odds. This is a game that expands on the first installment. Players will have more variety of enemies, larger areas to explore, and an even more brutal gameplay experience. Likewise, with Ellie being quite a bit more nimble than Joel, players will have a bit easier time quickly dodging attacks and fleeing out of danger.
#2 Horizon Zero Dawn
Platform : PC, PS4
Release Date : PS4 28 February 2017
PC 7 August 2020
Genre : Action role-playing
Horizon Zero Dawn is another excellent example of a modern post-apocalyptic video game title. Released in 2017 by Guerrilla Games, the same development team that worked on the Killzone franchise for Sony, opted to bring out a new action RPG adventure. Players are stepping far into the future where humanity long ago has fallen. With only shells left of once-thriving cities, players will find that what’s left of humanity has resorted back into native tribes.
Little information is known about the world before, but we do know that humans are no longer the greatest threat in the world. Instead, we have massive mechanical beasts that roam the open world. In this game, players are stepping into the role of Aloy, a young huntress that was made an outcast as a newborn baby. Raised by another outcast, Aloy grows up to start a journey to figure out where she came from and why she was thrown out as a newborn. Along the way, Aloy will get to explore the open world, battle against these mechanical beasts, aid those in need, and battle against other hostile factions that are proving to be a problem.
#1 Horizon Forbidden West
Platform: PS4, PS5
Release Date: February 18, 2022
Genre: Action role-playing
Horizon Zero Dawn was a huge hit that was set in the distant future long after mankind had fallen, leaving humanity to live among themselves in small tribal groups. The narrative mainly revolved around Aloy, who was banished from her tribe as a baby, and as a result, she sets out on a quest to figure out where she belongs in this world that giant mechanical beasts dominate. Now we have a new video game installment called Horizon Forbidden West.
Aloy has a new challenging quest to take on. After a plague has taken over the world, dooming all living things, players will have to venture to the west coast in hopes of finding the source of this plague and saving humanity from destruction. With that said, Aloy will find new mechanical beasts and other hostile tribes that have taken control of these robotic creatures while also claiming territories she will need to venture through.
