Dragon Age 3: Inquisition: Learn The Lore Of The Grey Wardens, The Darkspawn, And The Fortress Of Adamant

May 17, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

The Inquisitor is going to have a lot of backstory to catch up to, but you can get yourself acquainted early here.

Today, we’re looking at some of the lore of Dragon Age 3: Inquisition. Bioware has shared some excerpts from the game’s rich history. In particular, we’re learning about the Grey Wardens, the Darkspawn, and the Fortress of Adamant.

The Grey Wardens trace their origins to the first Blight, a war that waged for over 90 years. The soldiers of the Imperium renounced their oaths to the inutile kingdom, to form their own alliance to fight back against the Blight. In 992 of theTevinter Imperium, they were successful in taking down the Archdemon Dumat, and have kept guard over humanity, fighting the dragon-gods, through the ages.

Archaeology and anthropology don’t exist in the world of Dragon Age, so no one has made that definitive study to trace back the origins of the Darkspawn. As longtime players know, the Darkspawn are always behind the Blights, when they corrupt an old God into becoming an Archdemon, to wreak havoc on the world above. These are terrible creatures, who prefer to capture victims to eat them alive, and dwell in the dark.

In the many Blights where the Grey Wardens faced off against the Darkspawn, one of their great regrets was abandoning their once-stronghold, the Fortress of Adamant. The structure stood as testament to the Wardens’ greatest triumph against the Darkspawn, however, they ages had faded the memories of those past glories.

As those years passed, the fortress became more of a liability to the Wardens than a key stronghold worth defending, and so the Order made the call to close the structure rather than preserve it. You just know the Inquisitor and his party is going to pass by here now, don’t you?

Dragon Age 3: Inquisition is coming October 7 to Windows, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
