The DualShock 4 LightBar Was For Project Morpheus After All

May 8, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

You know what though, this still makes the light useless to people who won’t get Morpheus, for one reason or another.

Sony has finally revealed that Dualshock 4’s light bar, a source of irritation for many Playstation 4 fans at launch, was made for Project Morpheus. In fact, Morpheus was part of the console’s design from the onset.

Until Morpheus’ announcement, it was thought that the DS4 glowed this way to match their Move controllers. Subsequently, Playroom now appears to be a diversion than a genuine sign that Sony was attempting something novel from scratch, which is a bit of a disappointment.

Sony even caved in to allow players to dim the light bar, but hindsight is 20/20, and now the light seems like something that would have been obvious if we had known about their VR beforehand.

This does corroborate some earlier rumors about how Project Morpheus will work. It appears players wearing the headset will be able to physically locate where their controller is, whether it’s the Move or DS4. We don’t know what applications Sony has in mind for it, but we’re sure they will have exciting experiences planned ahead, if developing them does not bankrupt them first.

In all seriousness though, it places some PS4 owners in an odd situation, particularly those who won’t be buying Morpheus for one reason (unaffordable) or another (health reasons). Why do they have to pay extra for a design that presumed everyone would go all-in? Maybe a Dualshock 4 without a lightbar should be in the works, to accommodate the subtle and diverse needs of the PS4’s gaming audience.

We’ll keep you up to date on the latest news related to Project Morpheus when it comes out.
