Epic Pays Out V-Bucks In Fortnite Loot Box Lawsuit

After a long, drawn-out legal battle, Epic Games is attempting to settle its loot box lawsuit by offering players some currency — not real currency, by Fortnite V-Bucks. Starting now, every player who purchased a loot box from Epic when they were still available should receive 1,000 V-Bucks. It also extends to Rocket League players, who should receive 1,000 credits if they purchased as key or an event crate.

Fortnite’s Save the World mode (not the battle royale mode) used to have randomized loot boxes, called loot llamas. They were officially discontinued in 2019, and replaced with “X-ray llamas” that show the contents before players purchased them. Epic was sued by the parents of an underage player for the allegedly predatory practice — though, to be clear, they were far from the only company that was raked over the coals for loot boxes.

Epic reports that anyone who purchased a loot llama would receive 1,000 V-Bucks, automatically added to their account. If you haven’t received it already, all you have to do is wait, according to Epic, and it should show up eventually. Keep in mind that’s 1,000 flat, no matter how many loot boxes you purchased — which, not that I’m advocating that we drop a lump sum of billions of V-bucks on the Fortnite whales, still doesn’t seem quite right to me.

If you visit the Epic loot box settlement website — yes, that’s a thing — you’ll find that you could, in theory, file a claim to get a partial refund for a cash purchase. You can get up to $50 if you file, or a credit of up to 13,500 V-Bucks. It’s not exactly a windfall, but if you want more than the 1,000 V-Bucks Epic’s giving away, that’s how you’ll get it. You can read more about it here.
