Spencer: Microsoft Won’t Make a Dedicated Xbox Handheld

May 6, 2014 by Stephen Daly

The company will support Windows Phones and tablets instead.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said he believes Microsoft will not create a dedicated handheld gaming device akin to the PlayStation Vita or Nintendo 3DS.

Asked about the possibility on Twitter, Spencer commented:

@xrCore I don't think we'll do a dedicated handheld gaming device, rather just focus on WP, tablets, maybe with controller support someday.

— Phil Spencer (@XboxP3) May 5, 2014

Spencer, appointed head of Xbox in March of this year, said that Microsoft will be making a number of announcements ahead of E3 next month where the company will show both new IPs and sequels.

In April, Spencer commented that their E3 presentation will be as games-focused as last year's presentation with few executives on stage to distract from the company's showing. Halo 5 developer 343 Industries has a "great plan" for E3, Spencer said in February.

Aside from Halo 5, Microsoft is expected to reveal more of key Xbox One exclusives including Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive, Remedy's Quantum Break, and possibly give us the first look at Black Tusk Studio's Gears of War project.

Spencer's remarks come after Microsoft founder Bill Gates said he would "absolutely" support CEO Satya Nadella if he chose to spin-off the Xbox division.
