In an interview with Eurogamer, id Software's John Carmack dropped some hints as to what id would preferably like to do for Quake V game: return to the original fantasy/gothic/Lovecraftian environments and settings of the original. Like Doom and Doom 2 before it did for LAN-based network multiplay, the first Quake was instrumental in setting the foundation for future online FPS multiplayer gaming. Simply put, without Quake, multiplayer gaming over the net simply wouldn't be where it is today. That said, it was also a pretty shoddy affair in terms of a single player campaign. With id's surprising and admirable new goals of telling quality single player campaigns (their upcoming game RAGE being an excellent indication of this), returning to the original locales of the first game could lead to some very interesting storytelling, considering the sources they were pulling from for their content.
Id has for the most part run the Quake 2 – 4 story into the ground. The Strogg invasion is over and done with, and id seems to know it. To quote John Carmack: “We are at least tossing around the possibilities of going back to the bizarre, mixed up Cthulhu-ish Quake 1 world and rebooting that direction. We think that would be a more interesting direction than doing more Strogg stuff after Quake 4.
