Valve’s Gabe Newell Comments On Cyberpunk 2077

January 21, 2021 by Dennis Patrick

Gabe reflects on the negative criticisms he’s received over the years.

2020 was a horrible year. Thanks to the worldwide health pandemic outbreak, we all were forced into social distancing in hopes of preventing the coronavirus from spreading any further. This also had an effect on several industries much like the video game industry. For instance, several studios were forced to close their offices and had their employees work remotely. That resulted in delays for various projects that pushed out from 2020 and into 2021.

One of the games that didn’t get delayed out of the year was CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk2077. The development studio was holding on to the hope that they would see their video game title launch into the marketplace before 2020 wrapped. It might have been delayed a few times within 2020, but we eventually saw Cyberpunk 2077 hit the marketplace on December 10, 2020. Unfortunately, the game received a ton of backlash from the fan base. While the game was riddled with bugs throughout all the platforms, last-generation base consoles could barely run this game which promoted the title to get pulled from the PlayStation Store along with refunds being issued both physically and digitally.

CD Projekt Red is working hard to deliver this game with enough patches and updates that it’s running smoothly. Recently, one of the industries high profile individuals, Valve’s Gabe Newell, spoke with TVNZ when Cyberpunk 2077 came up in conversation. Gabe made note that he had played the game and found that there are several brilliant aspects to the game. However, he also finds it unfair to throw stones at any other developer. In his mind, getting something as complex as Cyberpunk 2077 out the door is pretty amazing.

Still, with the negative feedback the studio is receiving right now, Gabe views it as people made simply because they care. He went on to make note that CD Projekt Red is a studio that offers a good amount of support to their games and we’ll likely see the very same thing with Cyberpunk 2077. Only time will tell just how well Cyberpunk 2077 turns out to be this year when the studio puts out more patches and content updates to the game.
