Mass Destruction Could Get Rebooted Without Duke Nukem

April 15, 2014 by Stephen Daly

3D Realms still being sued by Gearbox over IP possession.

A new teaser website suggests a reworking of 3D Realms and Interceptor Entertainment's Duke Nukem: Mass Destruction is in the works, without Duke.

The site, nogumneeded.com, features a bomb with a lit fuse and a countdown timer ending on May 14th. Both 3D Realms and Interceptor Entertainment are listed at the bottom of the page.

Mass Destruction was originally hinted at in February by alloutofgum.com, which now redirects to nogumneeded.com, as a top-down action RPG developed by 3D Realms for PC and PS4.

The two sites both reference one of Duke's most famous lines, "It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of gum," the quote is itself a reference to cult action film They Live.

All this comes amid protracted legal battles between Interceptor – which now owns 3D Realms – and Gearbox which claims ownership of the Duke Nukem IP. Late last Month 3D Realms issued its response to Gearbox's suite insisting they still hold the franchise's legal rights.

Gearbox maintains that it purchased the series in 2011 and 3D Realms and Interceptor are attempting "to illegally exploit Gearbox's intellectual property rights in the Duke Nukem video game franchise."

All we have to go on for now is the image of the bomb bearing the skull, still it's only a month until it explodes.
