Capcom Reveals Ultra Street Fighter 4 Edition Selects

March 3, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Much like in Hyper Street Fighter 2, Ultra Street Fighter 4 will allow you to have your favorite Street Fighter 4 character versions duke it out.

Capcom has revealed Ultra Street Fighter 4 will now have Edition Selects, allowing you to choose between the original, Super, Arcade, Arcade Ver. 2012, and Ultra versions of the characters.

This brings the game in line with Hyper Street Fighter 2, a 2003 rerelease of the 1987 original that allowed players to choose between Normal, Champ, Super, and Super T versions of these characters. These were based on The World Warrior, Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting, and Super SF2 Turbo, respectively.

In the same way, Street Fighter 4 mirrors Street Fighter 2 in how its initial release was followed by several significant updates, that were sold as actual separate retail releases (save Arcade Edition 2012 version). Of course, the line of thinking between these releases was mostly the same; Capcom responding to fan feedback, as well as the developers’ own desires to add more gameplay elements and features with each installment.

However, Street Fighter 4 came out in a vastly different environment than SF2 did. Fighting games made 4 % of total game sales in the US market, as based on NPD’s numbers in 2012. This is clearly a far cry from when the genre was at its zenith in the 90s. Whatever the size or state of the fighting game market, the fighting game faithful have resurfaced. Whether other gamers call it foolish or not, they’re ready to shell out for the latest update in the Street Fighter 4 series.
