inFamous Second Son Powers Change Constantly Based on Player Choice

February 12, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Brand new gameplay revealed as producer Nate Fox discusses karma and powers in inFamous: Second Son

Sucker Punch producer Nate Fox has spoken about how player choice is integral to inFamous Second Son and how the powers Delsin has access to in the game will continually shift based on player choice.

In an interview with PS Nation Podcast, Fox said "Well certainly the player gets to choose whether they want to be a hero and they choices they make change the story, change the powers you get; but it's very different in this one in that it changes the lives of the people Delsin meets along the way."

Fox gives the example of Fetch, who's a fellow Conduit – the name given to those who have superpowers in the game – and Delsin has the chance to either encourage her to make evil choices or to redeem herself.

Regarding the decision to use a real location for Second Son, Seattle, Fox explained that because Sucker Punch is based in the city they felt it was important to create somewhere as realistic as possible rather than a caricature of the Pacific Northwest like Empire City was based on New York and New Marais was inspired by New Orleans in the first two games.

"We wanted to make you absolutely believe it was real so that when we give you these powers you believe those are real too. On top of that, we just wanted to trash Seattle."

The interview also contains new gameplay footage of the game.

Separately, talking to Polygon Fox commented on powers and karma in the game saying, "Delsin can choose whether he wants to obliterate enemies or take them down alive" through the smoke and neon based powers he has available to him. He continued:

"Your powers evolve differently based on whether you're a hero or villain. If you're a good guy, you get more surgical strike abilities to fight the enemy and avoid civilians. If you're bad, you get more indiscriminate powers, you're just all about mayhem."

Fox said that the game will continually track what players are up to and that Delsin's powers will be altered to reflect player choice:

"We're charting what you do second-to-second. We're making sure that if you said you're going to try to be evil, you stick to it and keep up your mayhem levels. And if you're good we say, 'Hey, did you screw up and hurt somebody innocent?' and we zap you for it."

Delsin can choose to do some pretty horrific things but Fox says "That's part of the story and in his head, he's completely justified in doing it. There's a total internal logic to it." Players may want to choose the evil option as Fox has said that being bad is probably going to be more fun.

inFamous Second Son launches exclusively on PlayStation 4 on March 21st, a Friday.
