Sonic Multiplatform Game Rumors Debunked

February 4, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

SEGA was quick to quash speculation that their three title exclusive deal with Nintendo has been nixed.

SEGA has denied rumors that they are working on a multiplatform game for Sonic in connection to the blue hedgehog’s upcoming animated series, Sonic Boom.

Sonic Boom was announced last year, debuting in Cartoon Network and CANAL J in the fall of 2014. The CG series will be co-produced by SEGA of America and Genao Productions. Among the names attached are Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka and Bill Freiberger, previously of The Simpsons and Drawn Together.

Jump forward to just yesterday, at the International Toy Fair in Nuremberg, Germany. A sign in the Jazwares booth revealed details about Sonic Boom, parallel to information on Sonic games. Sonic Lost World and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games: Sochi 2014 are detailed, as well as what was apparently an upcoming 2015 game for Wii U, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.

Not so fast. While the internet drove itself crazy over the rumors, SEGA of America was quick to quash them. Community manager Kellie Parker provided this statement verbatim on their forums:

Hey guys —

The recent information coming out of Nuremburg Toy Fair was incorrect. SEGA has yet to announce details of upcoming console video games for Sonic the Hedgehog, or further details regarding the new Sonic CG TV series.

For official and up-to-date information on Sonic, be sure to look at our website, Facebook, and Twitter.

Sega and Nintendo have an agreement for three exclusive Sonic games, one of which remains unannounced. In hindsight, it is silly to think that that game would have suddenly gone multiplatform. The two companies are probably already deep in development of it and should be bringing it out this year.
