Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley has seemingly confirmed Sony's unannounced virtual reality headset device in a Reddit AMA.
Asked by a fan if EverQuest Next would support virtual reality alternatives to Oculus Rift Smedley said:
"Hearing good things about 2 competitors.. one of which actually comes from Sony. So I'm thinking this is real and we may have our Snowcrash after all."
Snowcrash is an acclaimed novel by Neal Stephenson in which the author lays out a vision for virtual reality based entertainment.
Reports that Sony are developing VR based technology first surfaced in September of last year when it was said that the headset was being tested internally on Evolution Studios' PS4 forthcoming racer DriveClub.
Last November patents for Sony's VR headset were also discovered.
EverQuest Next is in development for both PC and PS4 and is expected to be the first MMORPG to support Oculus Rift. Spin-off EverQuest Next Landmark, a world building tool for creating structures which can be imported into the main game, entered alpha testing last week.
