Nintendo Open to Merger or Acquisition

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata might need to make some drastic moves to see improvements to the company. The Wii U just isn’t selling well, and while the 3DS has taken great strides since its slow start, the profits the handheld is bringing in aren’t enough to keep the Mario maker happy. Speaking with The Nikkei (via GameInformer), Iwata admitted that Nintendo isn’t ruling out possible mergers or acquisitions down the line in order to turn things around.

“We'll change the way we sell products, by managing customer information via the Internet. We'll offer discounts to steady, regular customers,” he explained when asked about the business strategy. “We'll cultivate emerging markets and launch new businesses in health and other areas. In an emerging country, you can expand the user base only after you offer a product line different from advanced economies in pricing.

“We should abandon old assumptions about our businesses. We are considering M&As as an option. For this reason, we'll step up share buybacks.”

There are still games coming to the Wii U, but something has to change for Nintendo in the near future.
