Square Enix Axes Cloud Gaming Service CoreOnline

January 17, 2014 by Stephen Daly

The service was available for just 18 months but has been cancelled due to ‘limited commercial take-up’.

In an update on Square Enix's support website it has been revealed that the company's cloud gaming service CoreOnline was deactivated in November of last year.

Square Enix blamed "limited commercial take-up" of the service as the reason for this being the case commenting:

"CoreOnline was released as an experiment to see what demand there would be for HD games played via the browser. However, due to limited commercial take-up of this initiative, CoreOnline closed on Friday 29th November 2013."

The feature, which launched in August 2012, allowed users to play console level games straight from the web. Gamers could opt to buy individual levels or entire games while the option also existed to play free, ad-supported, titles.

At the launch of the service then Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada commented:

"Square Enix is at the forefront of experimentation of new business and services models in the game industry. Through our CoreOnline technology service, users can access our content easily through the browser."

CoreOnline released with Hitman: Blood Money and Mini Ninjas.
