Blizzard Looking to Transform Microtransaction Strategy

January 15, 2014 by Josiah Renaudin

The developers behind World of Warcraft are looking for new employees to make microtransactions more appealing.

Microsotransactions aren’t easy to integrate into an existing product. The extra cash is great to have, but if purchasable in-game items aren’t presented in a fair and interesting manner, they’ll most likely turn potential buyers away. Blizzard, the developer behind major franchises like World of Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft, understands this fact and is looking for new blood to help redefine its microtransaction strategy.

New job listings for a director and manager of the company's new "Microtransaction Strategy" unit have been discovered, and they ask for a way to improve the quality of consumer experiences.

“You will work with game team leadership to define and evolve monetization strategies for our games, targeting the intersection of revenue generation goals and quality player experience,” reads the director post. “Ideally, you will have experience conceptualizing and iterating micro-transaction based game business models, and possess a deep understanding of player interactions with those models, both at the individual and community levels.”

World of Warcraft is losing subscribers by the month, so it wouldn’t hurt to have smarter microsotransactions bring in additional revenue.
