Titanfall Only Supports 12 Players for the Sake of Fun

January 10, 2014 by Josiah Renaudin

Titanfall could have more players, but Respawn didn’t want it that way.

Titanfall doesn’t support 12 players in a single map because of technical limitations. If you look back to last year’s E3, you’ll remember developer Respawn showcasing 7-on-7 battles and yes, everything ran smoothly for a game not expected until early 2014. The real reason that the shooter won’t include dozens of soldiers traversing the battlefield is because the team found the game much more fun with fewer people in a map.

Engineer Jon Shiring explaines that many different numbers were tested, and 12 was where things just clicked.

"That's what the designers have come up with as the most fun to play through lots of trial and error," he told OXM. "It's not a technical limitation, but we're designing the game to be the most fun that we can make it.”

It’s pretty clear that more players don’t make for a better game. Remember MAG and its 256 players? Honestly, there’s little about that game worth remembering.

Titanfall is expected to launch this March. If you’re interested, you can take a look at the three confirmed mechs and what they can do right here.
