UK Student Spends $734 on a Picture of an Xbox One

December 5, 2013 by Stephen Daly

He believed he would be getting the console despite item being listed as ‘photo’ on Ebay.

Peter Clatworthy of Nottingham, UK, has spent £450 (€538/$734) for a photo of an Xbox One Day One edition console thinking he would get the actual system.

The 19 year old, who had intended to buy the console for his four year old son McKenzie, instead received a poor quality image of the Xbox One box.

Speaking to the Nottingham Post, Clatworthy said:

“It said ‘photo’ and I was in two minds, but I looked at the description and the fact it was in the right category made me think it was genuine. I looked at the seller’s feedback and there was nothing negative. I bought it there and then because I thought it was a good deal.

“It’s obvious now I’ve been conned out of my money. They’d written on the back of it ‘thank you for your purchase’. I was fuming.”

The Xbox One Day One edition was released in the UK on November 22nd and cost £429 including a special controller, Achievement, and free copy of either FIFA 14 or Forza Motorsport 5. Some have taken to selling the Achievement, the code for the free game, and even the system's packaging for several times the price of the console.
