Cyberpunk 2077 Developers Now Under Crunch After Delay Announcement

January 17, 2020 by Dennis Patrick

No one likes crunch.

CD Projekt Red is a massively popular video game development studio. With the work put into The Witcher trilogy that has gained worldwide attention, there is a ton of attention on the studio with their next major release, Cyberpunk 2077. This new title is quite anticipated and while it’s still being released this year, the game did get hit with delay recently. Now the news is coming out that the developers are being pushed into crunch time.

No one likes crunch and we’ve certainly heard plenty of horror stories with developers being tossed into a crunch. Essentially, this is a term used when developers are forced into working long hours with little pay just to ensure that the work is able to get done by a specific date. As a result, there is a poor balance between life and work and CD Projekt Red has been viewed in not a great limelight over this subject in the past.

Coming off of The Witcher 3 it seemed that CD Projekt Red was going to change things around and make crunch a thing of the past for the development studio. Instead, it turns out that the development studio is going back to doing crunch after delaying the game. News of the studio entering crunch came out by CD Projekt Red’s Q&A call where a participant asked if the development team would be required to put in crunch hours.

CD Projekt Red had stated that they try to limit crunch as much as possible but now entering the final stage, they are putting crunch time on the developers. However, it’s said that they try to be reasonable in that regard so it could be a bit easier with the developers working on the game. At the moment, it has been unveiled that Cyberpunk 2077 is completely done and fully playable. With the delay, the game is being put through some more polishing while developers continue to work out any bugs or glitches that may show up during playtesting.

As of right now, players can pick up a copy of Cyberpunk 2077 on September 17, 2020, for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia platforms.
