One of the more anticipated video game titles launching this month is The Outer Worlds from development studio Obsidian Entertainment. With titles such as Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, and Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, the studio has quite the backlog of video games. Now, that we’re approaching its upcoming installment, The Outer Worlds, some may be wondering what the future may hold for the IP.

It’s not too surprising to see more talk going on about a potential sequel. In the past, we’ve seen reports of the development studio having plenty of content to make The Outer Worlds a series. However, when it comes to a sequel, you shouldn’t expect an open-world aspect to be featured. Instead, Leonard Boyarsky and Nitai Poddar from Obsidian Entertainment spoke with Game Informer. It was during the conversation that the devs revealed their skepticism with having larger budgets with video game productions. Instead, they prefer a smaller budget and less staff to really create something that is not only unique but easier to channel creative decisions with the whole team. Likewise, there is a stigma of bigger budget video game titles being open world. Poddar commented that having an open-world game can be a bit tough to handle as it often means the potential of getting burnt out or using fetch quests rather than having a more meaningful mission.

That’s not to say that there wouldn’t be large levels to freely explore, but we can write off a massive open world. This could also work as the game is based around space travel and visiting new worlds so perhaps having a large set-piece with each mission would handle better than restricting players with just a single large open-world map. Regardless, that’s just the potential of a sequel as right now the focus is just getting The Outer Worlds out into the market. You can expect The Outer Worlds to launch starting on October 25, 2019, for the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch platforms.
