Ubisoft has announced that it is to end the practice of including Uplay Passports in games and will make the one included with the recently released Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag free of charge to those who buy a used copy of the game.
The company said it had come to the decision as a result of community feedback.
In a statement on the Ubiblog communications manager Gary Steinman wrote:
"Uplay Passport will not be a part of any future Ubisoft games. The Uplay Passport program was initiated as a means of giving customers full access and support for online multiplayer and features, along with exclusive content, bonuses and rewards.
"However, games today are blurring the line between offline and online, between what is 'single player' and what is 'multiplayer.' Based on that and on the feedback we received from you, we recognized that Passport is no longer the best approach for ensuring that all our customers have the best possible experience with all facets of our games."
Players who have already purchased a pass for Assassin's Creed 4 can contact customer support for a refund. Earlier this year EA, who originally started including passes with games, also abandoned their program due to the reputational damage.
