Developers Have Been Holding Back Big Ideas for PS4 and Xbox One, Says Titanfall Dev

October 22, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Expect a swell of new, big ideas to come to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

It’s difficult to deny that the industry has seen a certain degree of stagnation over the last few years. Thanks to the extended lives of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, developers have had trouble pushing technology and mechanics forward in a meaningful way. Should the power of the hardware determine software creativity? That’s up for debate, but Respawn developer Drew McCoy believes that all the big ideas studios have had as of late were being saved for the launch of new consoles.

“It’s been eight years since the last generation started, so people are just clamoring for new hardware. New experiences,” McCoy said in an interview with MMGN. “I think the last few years, games have stagnated a lot. People are holding back their new, big ideas. Gamers feel that. They know that. They’re waiting.”

Titanfall has become one of the most anticipated next-generation titles currently in development, so it looks as if Respawn is doing something right. However, this adds an additional layer of pressure to a still-young team, so McCoy is hoping that everything turns out perfectly with the game.

“All they want is that next awesome thing to grab on to. What better time than now? It’s like, oh man, we can’t screw this up,” he continued. “Especially when we came out of E3 with that sort of great response. We came out of there really excited, but also realizing, ‘Oh man, we can’t drop the ball on this.’ This has to be perfect.”

Expect to see this Xbox One, PC, and Xbox 360 game early next year.
