NYCC 2018 Preview: Resident Evil 2 Remake is Poised to be One of the Best Games This Generation

October 9, 2018 by Nick Biazzo

Is this the game of the show?

Capcom has brought two great titles to New York Comic Con 2018, Devil May Cry 5, and the highly anticipated Resident Evil 2 Remake. I had the pleasure of playing Resident Evil 2 Remake and I am so happy I got to preview this title! I can imagine DMC 5 being as awesome, but being a horror buff, Resident Evil 2 Remake was right up my alley.

This RE2 Remake is a pretty big deal, it has been in development for quite some time and it remains one of the best titles in the long-running series. I sadly never played the original so this game is going to be completely new to me. My time with the demo had me hyped beyond belief!

I would like to also note before playing the demo, Capcom manages to bring an awesome booth to NYCC year in and year out. This year is another example of how immersive they get their attendees. The booth was a replica of the iconic police station in Racoon City, where most of the game takes place.

Now let’s get to the demo portion of the preview. The demo featured Claire Redfield. One of the first things I noticed was the attention to detail in this remake. The graphics are downright amazing, one of the best this entire generation; I truly believe this remake will be one of the best looking this generation and there are still a ton of games still on the way.

Now the gameplay is identical to the 1-hour demo we’ve received for Leon, but instead of playing a more open section of the game, we played a more linear section with the alternate character — Claire. This section was a lot scarier in my opinion, due to the mini-boss battle.

Fans of the series will remember Birkin, the giant eye looking, zombie. The boss battle had Claire and Birkin facing off in a tight limited space. In addition to having a scary monster chasing you in the dark, you got to keep an eye on your ammo, health, and jump scares from wherever Birkin lurks. The shooting is on par from the last demo, and it just feels really good; that’s the best way to say it — it just feels so good!

I never managed to play the original title so this remake will have me being surprised at every corner. I can also imagine that there are some first-time users to this title as well, so I can see a lot of positive buzz around it when releases early 2019. I left my demo wanting more, and the wait for the official release will feel even longer than I imagined.

Resident Evil 2 Remake is set to release for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on January 29, 2019. Are you excited about the upcoming remake? Let us know in the comments below!
