A Flash Emulator Is In The Works To Save Past Flash Games

August 26, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

Everyone has played flash games and now there’s an attempt to save them.

You don’t have to be into tech or the full lingo to understand flash-based video game titles. They are free and used to flood the internet for years. These were quick games to play right from your internet browser, but you may have felt that the games are on their way out the door for good. In a recent announcement from Adobe, the Flash player is coming to an end after 2020 so that could mean those old flash-based games you use to enjoy may no longer run from your computer. That’s something a Mike Welsh is hoping to avoid.

In an attempt to save countless flash game, Mike Welsh is working on an emulator that can be downloaded as a web browser extension. The program is known as Ruffle and it will allow players to enjoy a flash game seamlessly right on their web browser. This will take some time to roll out but at the very least, it’s a start in hopes of preserving some of the biggest video game hits that we’ve all enjoyed over the years.

This shred of news came as a forum post from Newgrounds, a website that is looking to incorporate the extension so all past flash content will run as intended. Just how long this project will take before it supports all flash-based content that was created over the years remains to be seen, but you can view its progress from the official website right here. Since we’re reflecting past PC gaming, let us know what your favorite flash game was and if you still enjoying playing these indie titles today.
