Camera Functionality Not Important to Early PS4 Adopters, Says Sony

October 10, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

It’s not the camera that will sell expensive next-gen hardware early on.

The PlayStation 4 will launch at a price point $100 cheaper than the Xbox One, and one of the main reasons for this difference is Microsoft’s inclusion of the Kinect in every box. The technology won’t be required for the console to run, but that hasn’t stopped the Xbox maker from asking all its fans to believe in its motion camera-fueled future.

Sony, on the other hand, doesn’t see the demand for cameras from the early adaptors. If new PS4 owners want the device, it’s out there. But Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO, Andrew House, doesn’t want to push technology that the fans who pre-ordered his company’s console day one aren’t clamoring over.

"Certainly for the earlier part of the lifecycle, the vast majority of the audience that we speak to tells us that their primary wish is for the full controller interface and there's not necessarily a huge emphasis being placed on camera interaction," House said in an interview with Business Spectator.

House continued by saying that Sony is willing to “adjust messaging” over time, so it could be possible to see a console bundled with a camera in order to hit the more casual audiences out there. However, it’s games like Killzone: Shadow Fall and Watch Dogs that will grab the core group that just wants to hold a real controller in hand. That’s Sony’s early bet, and according to pre-order numbers, things are paying off.
