Batman: Arkhams Origins PC Showcases Nvidia GTX’s Advanced Graphics Capabilites

October 5, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Expect a prettier, more detailed Arkham on an Nvidia PC

Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment recently revealed a collaboration with Nvidia to optimize the PC version of Batman: Arkham Origins. While it won’t affect the core gameplay experience, gamers who play the game on Nvidia PCs will get a little more oomph in the visuals department.

The Batman: Arkham Origins GeForce GTX Technology Trailer certainly tries its hardest to convince you that you could be missing out if you don’t play this version of the game. It demonstrates how PhysX is able to generate smoke and snow effects that reacts realistically to Batman and other characters as they move around in the game. Volumetric particle acceleration allows GTX to treat the smoke as actual microparticles and depict them as wispy and easily passed through appropriately. Thanks to physical particle simulation and apex turbulence, GTX can also simulate the effects of strong winds and snow from the rough climate conditions of winter.

The trailer rounds off with a discussion of TXAA, a new antialiasing technology which improves upon conventional tech. It does the job of removing antialiased lines, but also dispenses with the particle effects that usually come out of it.

Nividia has other technologies they’ve applied to Arkham Origins they intend to demonstrate in future trailers. PhysX allows more realistic simulation of cloth movement, including billowing and getting destroyed. Direct X 11 Tesselation  was applied to snow effects and also Batman’s cape, allowing both to create more visually interesting shapes with appropriate shadowing. There is also HBAO +, Percentage-Closer Soft Shadows, and Depth of Field and Bokeh.

Batman: Arkham Origins will be released October 25 for Windows PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii U.
