Wii U Firmware Update 4.0.0, Adds Multiple Features Including Off TV Wii Mode

October 1, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

You can also plug in USB keyboards and use Dolby speakers now.

Nintendo has just released a 700 MB firmware update 4.0.0 for the Wii U, providing additional features and improvements to the Internet Browser, as well as the usual fixes to system stability.

The biggest new feature streams video and sound from the Wii U to the GamePad while it is in Wii Mode. When this is activated, it actually streams from both the TV and the GamePad. Unfortunately, the GamePad itself does not operate as the Wii controller, so you will still have to reach for your WiiMotes to get to gaming. To be fair, most games are made around the WiiMote’s motion controls.

Other popular new features allows you to plug in USB keyboards, support for Dolby Pro Logic II Surround Sound on Wii software, and allows you to activate Spotpass automatically, so you get software and demos without even asking.

Speaking of sound, you can now choose to output audio through HDMI or a non-HDMI cable, as well as both. You can also tweak the intervals the Wii U does Standby Functions under Power Settings. This includes downloading software and updates in the background.

The Internet browser has also seen several improvements, including the ability to open the browser mid-game at any time and share screenshots. You can also view (not download) PDF files, and save usernames and passwords for sites with logins. Video playback has received additional controls on the L and R buttons, and there are added features that enable developer tools and set user agent.

There are a few other improvements, but overall, these are considerable additions that make Wii U a more enjoyable overall experience. Notably, this update came with some updated new Terms and Conditions, possibly to make way for saving login data. We may hear more about this update in the Nintendo Direct later today, but for now, if you have a Wii U, make sure to update your console because you do not want to miss out on these.
