Beyond: Two Souls Playable Entirely on Your Phone

September 27, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Just one finger needed to play Beyond on touch device.

"Not everybody was born with a DualShock controller in their hands," Beyond: Two Souls director David Cage said at Eurogamer Expo today.

Cage was commenting on the decision the make Beyond playable entirely on a free iPhone and Android app. The decisions came about because of player feedback from the studio's last game; Heavy Rain.

He said many people played that game in the company of a significant other who often called the shots but didn't actually pick up the controller.

"Sometimes it was the girlfriend or the wife," Cage said, "sometimes it was the friend who was not a gamer. Sometimes it was the parents or even the grandparents; there was a guy who told me he played the entire game with his grandmother.Cool."

The app is available to download now and is known as Beyond Touch.

"It connects to the console via Wi-Fi, and from this point you can play the entire game, in single-player if you want, just using your iPhone … just with one finger. It's a very simplified interface [and] makes the game very passive and simple."

If you want, you can also play the game co-operatively with one player controlling protagonist Jodie Holmes while another controls the supernatural entity Holmes is connected to using either DualShocks or touch enabled devices.

"For us this is a key feature in the game," Cage commented.

Beyond: Two Souls is being released on October 8th in North America and on October 11th in Europe. The game cost just $27 million to develop and a demo is available through some pre-order outlets now.
