Ubisoft: We Don’t Know if Watch Dogs Will be 1080p on Next-Gen

September 27, 2013 by Stephen Daly

The game will run at 30FPS.

Watch_Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin has told Videogamer that he doesn't know whether the game will run at 720p or 1080p resolution on PS4 and Xbox One though he did confirm 30FPS on next-gen systems.

"Right now the frame rate we're focussing on [is] a steady 30[FPS]. There's always a balance, especially for open world, between the simulation and the rest.

"I think for where we are, the most important thing is the steadiness and [ensuring] that it's always capped the same so when you play it it feels right."

Morin, speaking to Eurogamer, compared the game's scale to that of Grand Theft Auto 5.

"One thing I wanted to promote with Watch_Dogs was density, a lot more than scale. We have a big city but one thing a lot of games aren't exploring is the shared density of it.

"[In Watch_Dogs] you can stand still and profile people for ten minutes – you're playing without moving, almost. I think that's even more important to me than just adding size to it. I don't want size just becoming a space between A and B. We have a huge world but it's more about the density."

He added that this size game world made sense in Grand Theft Auto because players have the option to fly; something you won't be able to do in Watch_Dogs.

"GTA5 has a huge world but it has flying, it has jets so it serves that purpose. You don't have a jet unless you have the space to fly into. Us, we have huge density, so if we double or triple the scale then you're going to start hitting repetition because we wanted to aim for the density first. We wanted the game to be the right size for that density, so it's a matter of balancing what you want to achieve."

Watch_Dogs is set for released on PC, PS3, PS4, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in November. Morin said the Wii U version is somewhere between the current and next-gen version but is closer to PS3 and Xbox 360.
