Grand Theft Auto Online Microtransaction Prices Revealed

September 25, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Evidence mounts Rockstar is serious about microtransactions.

Eurogamer claims to have a source confirming Grand Theft Auto Online microtransactions, going so far as to share prices for the UK. Rockstar has not yet commented to this story, but based on how this information has been acquired, it’s very likely that this is all true.

To reacquaint those of you who were unaware, just two days ago a Redditor claimed to have found code in Rockstar’s website revealing the existence of cash cards for Grand Theft Auto Online. The cards do take the appearance of conventional credit cards and come in increments of $ 100,000, $ 200,000, $ 500,000, and $ 1,250,000. I personally checked as of this writing and can confirm it’s stayed where it is as it is.

Moving forward to now, Eurogamer’s unnamed source claims to have the names and UK prices for each card, as shared below:

  • 1.99 pounds for the $100,000 Red Shark Cash Card
  • 3.49 pounds for the $200,000 Tiger Shark Cash Card
  • 6.99 pounds for the $500,000 Bull Shark Cash Card
  • 13.49 pounds for the $1,250,000 Great White Shark Cash Card

Based on these prices, buying pricier cards nets you a better exchange rate, aka you get more value. However, that’s not all there is to it. Grand Theft Auto Online prices for items are conspicuously cheaper than Grand Theft Auto 5. Furthermore, no matter how much in-game cash you get, some items are simply locked out from you until you progress to a certain level.

Assuming this is all correct, Rockstar seems to have been careful about implementing microtransactions for Grand Theft Auto Online. The question, of course, is are players willing to pony up the cash?
