Sony: Kinect-Like Navigation Coming to PS4

September 20, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Post-launch patch will be issued to boost camera’s integration.

Sony is planning to issue a post launch patch for the PlayStation 4 which could see Kinect-like navigation and others features come to the console via the system's camera which will be sold separately.

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan exec Masayasu Ito confirmed the news at a Tokyo Game Show roundatable attended by Eurogamer this morning.

"But it could go deeper" he commented though Ito refused to offer further details.

Ar Sony's TGS press conference it was revealed that you will be able to use the PS4's camera to log into your profile with the sensor's fact scanning technology in a similar fashion to the Xbox One's Kinect.

You will be also be able to launch applications and games using voice commands and these features are expected to be ready for launch.

News of the PS4 camera's voice command functionality came from Amazon last month which describes the camera as follows:

"From navigational voice commands to facial recognition, the PlayStation Camera adds incredible innovation to your gaming."

It is believed that the PS4 originally included a camera but this removed to keep down costs and help achieve the system's $399 price tag. The camera will now go on sale for $60.

Every Xbox One, which costs $499, includes a Kinect sensor.
