Netflix Announces New Magic: The Gathering Animated Series, Russo Brothers Will Serve as Executive Producers

June 3, 2019 by Jordan Biazzo

This should be fun!

Netflix has announced today that they will be working on a new animated video game series with the help of the Avengers: Endgame directors — the Russo Brothers.

The new video game animated show will be centered around the wildly popular series — Magic: The Gathering. The game has been running for more than 25 years from tabletop board games, comics, to video games. It a huge franchise and Netflix knows it.

The team of animators is pretty stacked too. From the press release earlier today, we now know that the team will feature creative talent from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Batman: The Animated Series and much more!

Apparently, Joe and Anthony Russo are big-time Magic: The Gathering fans so it’s only right that they have some involvement in bring the show to life.

“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” said Joe and Anthony Russo.

John Derderian, head of Anime programming for Netflix is pretty exciting to be working on the project as well. Having the Russo Brothers aboard is a nice touch thanks to their recent achievements in epic storytelling – -Infinity War and Endgame.

“Magic is a beloved global franchise with a massively engaged fan base that has only continued to grow over the last 25 years,” said John Derderian, head of Anime programming for Netflix. “There’s no one better suited to bring this story to audiences around the world than Joe and Anthony Russo, whose talent for genre storytelling is unmatched, as demonstrated by their central role in creating some of the biggest box office hits of all time.”

Netflix has been working on some great animation titles in the past couple of years and more importantly some great video game adaptations. We’ve seen the Castlevania series come to life, which is phenomenal, and we also are receiving a new Devil May Cry anime that will tie into the same universe as Castlevania. Also, note that the Witcher live-action series is another video game adaptation many gamers are waiting to watch.

With Magic: The Gathering joining the fray, it will be a good handful of animated and non-animated video game shows on the streaming service. Now the only question is will it be good? We will have to wait and find out.
