JJ Abrams ‘Emotionally Hurt’ by Star Trek Game

September 13, 2013 by Stephen Daly

Says the game ‘a big disappointment.’

Star Trek and Star Trek: Into Darkness director JJ Abrams has commented on the video game tie-in saying "emotionally it hurt".

Digital Extremes' production is set between the two films and uses the likeness and voices of the reboot's Kirk and Spock in a battle against the gorn.

Abrams says he originally worked with Digital Extremes but left when he learned how the game would turn out.

"[It] was obviously a big disappointment to me. We were actually involved from the very beginning and then we sort of realised that it was not going in a place where we were going to get what we wanted, so we dropped out and they continued to do it despite… y'know…"

"To me the video game could have been something that actually really benefited the series and was an exciting, fun game with great gameplay and instead it was not.

"For me emotionally it hurt, 'cos we were working our asses off making the movie and then this game came out and it got, this isn't even my opinion, it got universally panned and I think that it was something without question that didn't help the movie and arguably hurt it."

Abrams is working with Valve to bring Half-Life and Portal to the movies as well as helming Star Wars: Episode VII. It was recently confirmed that due to his work with Disney he will not be returning to direct an adventure on the Enterprise.
