BioShock and Magic: The Gathering Creators Launch Card Hunter

September 12, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

This free-to-play experience is being brought to you by some of the biggest names in the industry.

If you show the average consumer a free-to-play browser game called, “Card Hunter,” you probably shouldn’t expect the most enthusiastic response. However, you might see a bit of life after mentioning the involvement of legendary Magic: The Gathering creator Richard Garfield. And, to take it a step further, you might actually get a smile after revealing that Card Hunter is Irrational Games co-founder Jonathan Chey’s first game since BioShock.

That doesn't mean that you'll have the world convinced taht Card Hunter is a must-play experience, but what makes this game such an easy sell is that it's free of charge. Thousands of beta testers have helped bring this mix of card collecting, board gaming, and fantasy role-playing to a computer near you, and there looks to be enough creativity in the mechanics to warrant at least a quick look.

“I wanted to break away from the usual with this game” Chey said in a press release. “We’ve come up with brand new card play and deck-building mechanics, setting players challenges they’ve never seen before, all through the lens of discovering tabletop role-playing with your friends.”

If the idea of microtransactions shakes you to the core, there’s a Basic Edition that should get players started on the right foot. This $25 bundle includes all the Treasure Hunt adventures, one month Card Hunter Club membership, nine extra figures and 100 slices of tasty Papa Manchu pizza. Otherwise, just follow the included link if you’re ready to jump right into this fantasy world.
