Vita TV Capable Of Running PS3 Games

September 12, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

System will come to Asian markets, no Western release in sight.

In an interview with Japanese technology blog Tech On!, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House explained that the upcoming Vita TV has the technical capability to run Playstation 3 games.

We already know that the Vita TV will be able to play Playstation Portable, Playstation One and Vita titles, and will also be able to stream Playstation 4 games. Likewise, Playstation 4 is capable of streaming games, including Playstation 3 games, via Gaikai.

House says that Vita TV can use that streaming capability from Gaikai to stream Playstation 3 games. As explained in the  Nikkei interview, these are presumably not streamed  from a Playstation 4, but Playstation 3 games you can get just for your Vita TV.

House also talked about how they hope the Vita TV will have a huge appeal with more casual players, based on both the low price and the wide accessibility of games.  He also talks about Playstation Mobile as a source for cheap games, and how Vita TV is a better option than just plugging in a Vita for families. Simply put, Vita TV allows you to try multiplayer at a lower price range.

You may not be able to try out Vita’s streaming capabilities anytime soon, depending on where you live. House ends the interview by explaining the Vita TV is coming to Asian countries such as China and South Korea after Japan, but is not yet scheduled to arrive for the US or Europe.

I have doubts Sony has the infrastructure set up to support streaming for all Vita TV owners worldwide, and this may secretly be another reason the system is not yet scheduled to come to the West. At least you can hope that any issues Sony has with Vita TV services will have been ironed out by the time the system comes stateside.
