Ed Boon Sets Record Straight Over False Mortal Kombat 11 Microtransactions Reports

April 25, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

It looks like you won’t have to fetch over thousands of dollars to unlock sins.

If you went online the past couple days you’d likely have come across some outrage towards NetherRealm Studios and their latest release, Mortal Kombat 11. The latest installment of the game franchise is out and you can get our overall thoughts on the title by watching our Before You Buy episode embedded above. However, going back to our original point, the past couple days have seen reports of gamers having to spend thousands of dollars in order to get all of the available skins within Mortal Kombat 11. As it turns out, those reports online were false and the development studio founder, Ed Boon, decided to get the record straight over Twitter.

When a false Reddit thread gained some attention online, publications started to spread the information around without looking a bit deeper. Originally, it was believed that in order to unlock all of the available skins within Mortal Kombat 11, gamers would have to fetch over $6,000 through microtransactions. That is not the truth, while the game does support microtransactions for Time Krystals, Ed Boon stated that the majority of the skins within the game are not even for sale.

L?L OMG! The $6440 story is complete bullshit! ?

Where do these people get their information? ? The VAST VAST majority of MK11 skins are NOT for sale. That’s not how @NetherRealm make games. You have to EARN them IN GAME!

Unlike some of the other popular trendy games like Fortnite where gamers often have to use real currency to gather various exclusive skins, Mortal Kombat 11 is keeping things old school. If you want a particular skin, then you have to play and earn that skin within the game. Personally, I prefer battling with my skill level than opening my wallet to unlock something within a game, but then again, I come from the cartridge days of gaming.

So it looks like we won’t have to stress over how many dollar bills we will have to sink into Mortal Kombat 11 to get some of these skins after all. Mortal Kombat 11 is available now for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC platforms.
