Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster Possibly Delayed?

September 4, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

On the upside, Vita may get physical game.

Fans at NeoGAF and GameFAQs have sounded off on the possibility that Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster may get delayed, barring official confirmation from Square Enix.

Diagol talks about how the game’s spruced-up graphics and audio look and sound good. The new interface is also attractive, and they retained all the voice acting from the original. However, he says the CG movies do not seem to have been altered, so lips won’t match the voices, and you can expect jaggies all over the place.

Zysoring from GameFAQs also got to play the game and verified the Vita will get the game in both digital and retail form.

MaverickHunterAsh, Zysoring, and Diagol have all independently confirmed that they talked to Square Enix representatives on the show floor, and they all say that Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster has been delayed till next year, at least by February according to MaverickHunterAsh.

As some commenters have pointed out, both the original Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 each only took two years to develop. This remaster for both games is not going to take longer to release than either of them.

The slow progress in the remaster is certainly a disappointment, but maybe it’s something that can’t be helped.  What is strange is having Square Enix representatives confirm this at the show without making an official press release for it.

The most optimistic hope is that maybe Square Enix actually is working on fixing the cutscenes. When you look at some recent comparable remasters, such as Jak and Daxter on the Vita or Tekken Tag Tournament HD, much of the work goes to cleaning up the jaggies so that the graphics look better in high resolution.  This is tedious work, and possibly last on the agenda for Square Enix. We’ll see if they make it worth the wait soon.
