Level 5 Going Multiplatform with Layton 7, Wonder Flick

August 26, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

New Inazuma Eleven still coming to 3DS.

In a press conference today, Level 5 announced two new games that are going beyond 3DS, a reimagined Layton 7 and a completely new IP called Wonder Flick. Inazuma Eleven is still coming to 3DS.

Layton 7 is completely unrecognizable. The preview footage shows a fresh, almost Claymation like art style, and hints at seven playable characters, none of which are the famous professor or his understudy.  In their presentation on a smartphone, you role play as these characters and manipulate them in an isometric 3D environment.  The preview footage also did not show any puzzles, but considering that’s what the series is known for, it would be a genuine surprise if those are out too. The game is coming to iOS, Android, and Nintendo 3DS.

Wonder Flick is a brand new RPG showing off 3D graphics, character creation tools, and a free to play model. Details are sparse, but I will say there is more than a passing resemblance to Dragon Quest. Gaming will begin on iOS and Android in Japan this November, and on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox One, and Wii U next year. It doesn’t look like the 3DS would struggle to host the game, but as far as I know the platform does not have a system to allow free to play possible on it, which is likely why it is sitting this one out.

Inazuma Eleven Go Galaxy is the static game in these announcements, coming to the 3DS this Winter. The game will have two version Pokemon-style.

People are going nuts over the Layton news, but I think there isn’t enough out there to make a judgement call on it. Level 5’s radical new direction could either really pay off or turn out bad.
