Ubisoft Announces Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 Will Be Released on Epic Games Store; Forgoes Steam

January 9, 2019 by Jordan Biazzo

This is a huge blow to Steam.

Ubisoft has announced today that the company will be deciding to release their upcoming shooter title, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 on both the Epic Games store and the official Ubisoft storefront; leaving Steam out of the fun.

This news is huge as for the past decade or so, PC games have been solely sold through Steam. However, with the new announcement of the Epic Games Store only taking 12% of sales compared to Steams steep cut of 30%, many game developers might be switching over to a different platform. There was no doubt indie and smaller studios would make the change, but Ubisoft making the announcement so quick has taken everyone by surprise.

Chris Early, vice president of partnerships at Ubisoft noted today: “We entrust Epic to deliver a smooth journey for our fans, from pre-ordering the game and enjoying our Beta to the launch… Epic continues to disrupt the video game industry, and their third-party digital distribution model is the latest example, and something Ubisoft wants to support.”

Founder and CEO of Epic, Tim Sweeney, also noted that the Epic Games Store will aim to provide the most publisher-friendly store, while also providing direct access to its customers.

“We aim to provide the most publisher-friendly store, providing direct access to customers and an 88% revenue split, enabling game creators to further re-invest in building great games,” said Tim Sweeney.

In related The Division 2 news, Ubisoft also released a new overview trailer of the game for the PC platform. The trailer showcasing some of the PC features, and specs required to play the game smoothly. Check out the full article here!

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 is set to release for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 15. Are you excited for the upcoming sequel? Let us know in the comments below!
