Tangiers comfortably ends Kickstarter at over $ 65,000

August 14, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Surreal stealth exploration game also getting developer commentary.

Unusual stealth exploration title Tangiers has just succesfully rounded off their Kickstarter campaign at 42,006 pounds, roughly a little over $ 65,000. Not only did they blast through the minimum 35,000 pounds minimum funding goal, they also hit the first 40,000 pounds stretch goal, adding commentary to the game.

Boasting a surreal art style rendered in 3D and a basic, obscure storyline, Tangiers is a stealth exploration action game built on Unity. Your playable character is a stranger to the game world, just like you are, and your entry has destroyed its balance. You must seek out five other beings and destroy them.

As you interact with the game world's elements, the world whittles away, occasionally rebuilding itself. For reasons unknown, your very presence is tearing this world apart. The open world is one giant sandbox environment, which reacts to your actions, and also adjusts its variable difficulty, in real time.

On a blog post on the site, lead developer Alex Harvey thanks everyone for their contributions and explains that they will basically be taking a breather, as Kickstarter will now take the next few days to collect the funds. They will also be putting up a Paypal account very soon, and have promised a postmortem for aspiring developers to go through.

This campaign was unusual as both Harvey and partner Michael Wright (together the dev company Andalusian) have not had prior experience releasing a commercial game, although they've clearly shown they have the know how to do it. Furthermore, Harvey has made no secret of quitting his job to fully commit himself to making the game, so this was truly make or break for them. We would like to congratulate Andalusian and are looking forward to tracking their development and Tangiers' eventual release.
