Nintendo Reveals Why Red Dead Redemption 2 Didn’t Release On Nintendo Switch

December 13, 2018 by Dennis Patrick

Big name third-party titles will start coming out for the platform.

One of the most anticipated video game releases of 2018 was Rockstar Games Red Dead Redemption 2. Players would once again trade in their supped up vehicles for a horse and six-shooter as they embark on another outlaw journey set in the Wild West. Set prior to the events of Red Dead Redemption, this game made it easy for newcomers to jump onto the game along with the diehard fans of the franchise. As the game was announced and slowly got close to its initial release date, two platforms, in particular, were missing from the mix. Unless you had a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, the latest triple AAA video game release from Rockstar Games would quickly pass by leaving you out of the loop.

While it’s expected the Red Dead Redemption 2 video game will eventually launch on the PC platform, Nintendo recently commented on why the video game never launched on the Nintendo Switch platform. This bit of news came from the Hollywood Reporter who spoke with Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America President. During the interview, Red Dead Redemption 2 was brought up where Reggie revealed that the developers didn’t have enough time to put the Nintendo Switch into focus for the game.

We’d love for it to be there. But again — and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process — Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities. Any game from a key third-party that’s coming out now, typically that development started well before any conversations about Nintendo Switch. What happens moving forward? We’ll see. But that’s how you wind up with a situation with Red Dead not being available on our platform.

Red Dead Redemption 2 started developed long before any murmurings got out about the Nintendo Switch and as a result, Rockstar Games didn’t have the opportunity to put the platform into the mix as they were developing the game. This is also the case for several big-name third-party video game titles and not due to any limitations of the Nintendo Switch hardware or concerns of the game content being released for the system.

This is good to know for the future as we may start seeing more games being announced that includes the Nintendo Switch as a platform release. Of course, that also means that the games announced may likely be too far into development to allow a launch on the Nintendo Switch. Perhaps Rockstar Games may look at the platform again for a later release but as of right now there is no indication that we can expect to play Red Dead Redemption 2 on Nintendo’s latest console hybrid.
