The Evil Within Might See Dark Souls-Style Multiplayer through DLC

August 12, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

Dark Souls continues to influence some of the brightest minds in the industry.

The Evil Within isn’t an action game with survival-horror influences. The main man behind the project and bright mind that thought up Resident Evil 4, Shinji Mikami, is looking to break new ground in the horror genre with his chilling third-person project, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any direct influences from other popular titles. The game that the team is looking to for possible future multiplayer, though, might not be one you’d expect.

Speaking with OXM, Mikami hinted at possible future DLC for The Evil Within that would add the style of online connectivity seen in From Software’s Dark Souls. Instead of directly pairing players into the narrative, other community members might just be able to influence your experience in a more hands-off manner. When asked about this decision, here’s what Mikami had to say:

"Yeah, maybe in DLC. I guess we can't really get into details."

Survival horror games aren’t exactly effective when another person is strolling right beside you, but with Mikami prioritizing the experience of real terror in his projects, this new style of online play could actually act as a scare-enhancer.  He noted at this year’s E3 that players “should experience immeasurable fear [and] also the triumph of overcoming those fears,” so you know that his focus is in the right place for the genre. More information will be unveiled from the OXM interview in the near future.
