4A Games’ Cancelled Deep Six Project Detailed by Former THQ VP

August 9, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

This underwater shooter was never able to reach the surface.

THQ may be dead and gone, but that doesn’t mean that we’ve heard each and every story that’s worth telling from the company. Although properties like Metro, South Park, and Saints Row have found new homes, Deep Six was one shooter that THQ was never able to get off the ground and nurture into a franchise. Danny Bilson, the former executive vice president of core games at THQ, recently spoke to Edge about what sounds like a truly creative concept.

“We were only working on the creative, we hadn’t started yet. It was really fresh and it has a really great concept. I think 4A was gonna do it, the team that did Metro,” Bilson said. “It was really awesome – we had lost the war of the worlds to a water-based alien planet and they’d flooded the earth so everything was underwater.”

Instead of working on Deep Six, 4A move on to develop Last Light, which faired quite well for new publisher Deep Silver. Although it wouldn’t be impossible for the developer to start work on this underwater title since new owner Nordic Games is flexible with its properties, it’s likely Bilson’s description is all we’ll ever know of the game.

“The player started in a work camp, because they’d imprisoned all of the humans on the ocean floor in these work camps. The player finds out that they’re exterminating humans and you have to escape – and the whole game was a journey to the surface, and what you found along the way was unbelievable,” he continued. “It was creative only. A team in LA were going to do a prototype, but then 4A were gonna do that after Metro.”
