Xbox One Gameplay Video Recording Requires Xbox Live Gold

August 7, 2013 by Andrea Castellano

Xbox One owners will need Gold to record videos.

Based on an Xbox Live features page, Xbox One owners will need an Xbox Live gold subscription to record videos of their games.

The feature that would allow players to record five minutes of gameplay on the Xbox One (opposed to the PS4's 15 minute length) will remain locked behind the Xbox Live gold subscription. Other features such as NFL broadcasts, Skype and SmartMatch will also require the Gold subscription.

The Xbox Live Gold requirement may seem insignificant, but it prevents players, who only desire single player games, from enjoying some of the Xbox One's new features. This does not mark Microsoft's first attempt when restricting services or features as Xbox 360 users without Gold could not use services like Netflix.

To bring comparison, the PS4 will not lock the video recording feature behind the PS Plus subscription alongside other things like free-to-play titles.

The Xbox One will launch sometime this November for $499.
