Planetside 2 could carry over your characters to PS4

August 7, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Sony says multiplayer out of the question, also discusses ease of development on PS4.

We know Planetside 2 is coming to Playstation 4, but Sony has yet to reveal a release date. Thankfully, details are starting to leak out thanks to Eurogamer's interview with the game's Creative Director, Matt Higby.

To get this out of the way first: unfortunately, you will not be able to do multiplayer between PC and Playstation 4. Surprisingly, the explanation Higby provided relates to the game's patches. He was forthcoming about the difficulty of getting patches approved through Playstation Network. The possibly delay between PC and  Playstation 4 versions simply would not be an acceptable situation. Instead, Sony is looking into moving character data from the PC to the  Playstation 4. The data that will be used is exactly the same format, so Higby says there should be no problems implementing this.

In fact, Higby goes on to compliment the Plastation 4 for how easy it is to program for, particularly its support of AMD. As Higby explains, AMD chips generally underperform on PCs since you're looking at a single core running it. Getting the most out of AMD chips entails multithreading across multiple cores, which the Playstation 4 has in spades.

So, Sony Online Entertainment has been preoccupied reprogramming the game from the ground up to take full advantage of AMD on the Playstation 4 and its multiple cores. Higby says that there will be a conspicuous boost in the game's performance that fans will notice immediately. He thinks they will really appreciate it, since technically most players have only experienced an underpowered version of the game thus far.

Sony Online is also looking at the Playstation 4's unique features. They will definitely be using the touchscreen for a more accessible UI and motion controls for flying vehicles. They're still not sure what to do with light bar, but are also looking into using the controller microphone and speakers in lieu of a headset.

Vita is getting the prerequisite linked play, but Sony Online is still looking into adding the game's iOS/Android companion apps into the Vita. Oculus Rift support is potentially also in the works.

Planetside 2 is a seemingly evergreen game, so this looks like a sure bet to get some sizable buys for the Playstation 4. We'll keep you posted when they finally come out with the release date.
