Tekken X Street Fighter still in production

August 5, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Katsuhiro Harada shares insight into growing fandom.

A nasty rumor sprang from a parody site that lead people to think that Namco Bandai had cancelled their end of their crossover fighting game franchise with Capcom, Tekken X Street Fighter. Thankfully, recent statements from Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada have confirmed that the series is still very much in development.

Spearking to Siliconera, Harada explained that they did not want to talk too much about the game right now precisely because Street Fighter X Tekken was still fresh in people's minds. His line of thought was that Capcom's game should get to squeeze as much interest out of fighting game fans as possible, to maximize that game's profits before Namco's game takes center stage.

If you may remember, this goes in line with what Capcom itself has said about Street Fighter X Tekken's poor sales. They laid the blame on the game's potential sales being cannibalized by a host of other games with similar content, most notably Street Fighter IV, but to a lesser extent, also Marvel vs Capcom 3.

In spite of that, the game has continued to sell and its fanbase continued to grow. In fact, Harada mentions he observed an interesting phenomena with Street Fighter X Tekken, as a new audience separate from either Street Fighter or Tekken fans have been coming in to try out and play the game. Harada hopes that Capcom can foster that audience and continue to help it grow so that, when the time is right, they can spring Tekken X Street Fighter to a captive fanbase.

Harada has had to confirm the game is still in development a year ago, and that the game is still coming for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. If you consider Street Fighter X Tekken's potential lifetime, it's probably inevitable that the game is coming to next-gen consoles as well, if not optimized for PS4 and Xbox One.
