American McGee’s Grimm is on Steam Greenlight

July 31, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Games also available for purchase on Spicy Horse Games’ official site.

Roughly a week after cancelling OZombie, American McGee has revived an older game project of his, American McGee's Grimm, and put it up on Steam Greenlight for approval.

Originally distributed exclusively on GameTap, American McGee's Grimm has you playing the eponymous character, not one of the Grimm brothers, but a disgruntled dwarf set on revising and ruining the world of fairy tales. Playing as the dwarf, you enter a new fairy tale world in each episode, and work to make each world dark and grim bit by bit. Using your dark powers increases a "Dark-O-Meter", which you can then use on enemies who will try to reverse what you are doing. To be truthful, as far as American McGee productions come and go, Grimm is not one of the better received ones, with much criticism leveled at the very basic gameplay and low production graphics.

The game was produced in partnership with Gametap and was one of the first instances of an episodic game release model. Meant to mirror a television series, each episode provided 30 minutes worth of content and was released weekly.

In a post on their official website, Spicy Horse Games announced that they had sent the game to Steam Greenlight for distribution there, but that they are also selling the episodes on their own site. You can buy them all for $ 20, get one volume, aka season, of episodes for $ 8, or buy individual episodes for $ 1.30.

The blog post makes no mention of any intent to make newer episodes than these, or perhaps to make enhanced editions to fix the game's issues, so Greenlight may simply be to get this game distributed on Steam. If you're interesting in buying or checking the episodes out, you can do so here.
