Oculus Rift Co-Founder Leaves Facebook After Supposed Rift 2 Cancellation

October 23, 2018 by Dennis Patrick

Facebook is not sharing their roadmap of the Rift but still investing towards PC version.

VR is becoming more mainstream with the help of HTC Vive, PlayStation VR along with the Oculus Rift. The latter was bought out by Facebook where the company is still working on the Oculus content with developers bringing out new exciting video games but today we’re learning that one important developer behind the success of the Oculus Rift is parting ways. Brendan Iribe was one of the founders of the Oculus and he took on the role of the CEO for Oculus until Facebook bought the company which put Brendan into the role of leading the PC VR division.

His departure was noted through a Facebook post but it wasn’t clear as to why he decided to leave Facebook and the Oculus division. There are rumors however that Facebook decided to cancel the Rift 2, the successor to the PC VR headset which could have been a factor to his departure. If these rumors turn out to be true, Facebook is looking to focus more on VR headsets that don’t require the connection to PC hardware, but again, these are merely rumors at the current moment.

TechCrunch reached out to get a comment from a Facebook spokesperson on the matter of the Rift 2. While the spokesperson did not discuss the future roadmap of the Rift, we did learn that the company is still looking to continue investing towards the PC version. At any rate, there are still plenty of great games and content being produced for the Oculus Rift and we’re eager to see what the next iteration of the VR headset ends up being.

We’re still very early into VR where we haven’t really seen a big jump into the next generation of VR headsets since the release of the HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and the Oculus Rift. At any rate, we’ll continue to keep you updated on the very latest.
