Capcom’s Mega Man reveal for Comic Con are Mega Man Game Boy Virtual Console games

July 23, 2013 by Ryan Parreno

Clarifies misunderstanding from lack of Mega Man at Capcom panel

Capcom community manager Brett Elston went on the Capcom Unity forums to explain that the company's big Mega Man reveal for San Diego Comic Con was precisely the release of Mega Man 2 to 4 from the Game Boy, as well as Mega Man Xtreme 1 and 2, to the 3DS Virtual Console.

The Mega Man Game Boy games are interesting incarnations of the series. They are essentially remixes of the original NES games, featuring new music, bosses, and overall different interpretations of the game series' conventions. Mega Man 5 is famous for being a wild departure in that regard, having you face Stardroids instead of Robot Masters and changing your weapon to a projectile arm that flies off and reattaches itself. Similarly, Mega Man Xtreme 2 is known for its RPG elements.

Elston needed to make the clarification because Capcom's panel description implied that they would announce the big Mega Man news in the panel. He made the later decision to delay the news so that the announcement of the new Strider game would get its own spotlight. Basically, they weren't able to correct communications in time to reflect this change of plans.

Irregardless of this small snafu, this announcement should be cause for celebration among Mega Man fans. Some fans may remember that as early as 2004, Capcom was planning a Mega Man Game Boy compilation to coincide with the release of Mega Man Anniversary Collection on the Gamecube, Playstation 2 and Xbox. Tentatively titled Mega Man Mania and initially headed to the Game Boy, development hit a roadblock when the team could not find the original source code for these games. Fast forward to now, and two years after releasing the first Game Boy Mega Man onto 3DS, Capcom is finally delivering on a promise almost a decade old.
